Newsflash:

SECOND DAY FOR THE EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIP J24
Friday, 01 June 2012 18:07

THE “SUPERBS” OF THE MARINA STILL FIRST AFTER SIX TESTS

Second day of competition in the racing area of Cannigione and "Superbs" of the Marina Militare are still on top in the standings after six races. Foremost among the Sardinians Vigne Surrau, bearers of the Club Nautico Arzachena with a 6.10.14. The event, which ends on June 3, is organized by the Club Nautico Arzachena and is supported by the Regione Autonoma della Sardegna, the Provincia Olbia Tempio, the Comune di Arzachena and numerous sponsors and local businesses.

The races today were dedicated by the crews to the cooperating of Samugheo Rossella Urru, who was abducted last October in a refugee camp in Algeria. The boats have competed with the sign located at the stern with the photo and the words "Free Rossella."

Wind west northwest at about 12 knots during the first race of the day of the J24 European Championship. Departure as scheduled at 12.
Avoltore at the head, the boat of Massimo Mariotti with Francesco Cruciani at the helm, followed by Brazilian Bruschetta and the German of Blankeneser Segel Club of Rotoman. Forth at the finish line the Americans of Furio. Excellent fifth place overall, for the Germans of United 5, after the three trials were stopped yesterday at the 26th position. Nice performance for Nord est Costruzioni, the boat-bearer of the club organizer. With Salvatore Orecchioni at the helm and Tonino Chessa at the tactics, North East wins a seventh place overall in front of the Italian Champions La Superba, eighths.

During the second race, which started at 13.30, it was necessary to reposition the field due to the unstable wind. The Greeks led by Dimitrios Altsiadis on Evniki arrived first but in OCS, followed by Witthemore on Furio and Avoltore team but they also finished in OCS. Therefore regatta cancelled for the team Mariotti, after the heavy yesterdays score, now seems to be away from the podium. Alberto Gai also loses rankings because he was trapped in the first departure of both tests.

In the third race with a mistral wind, Vigne Surrau, with Aurelio Bini at the helm, Evero Niccolini as tactician, cuts the line in fifth place overall and third in the classification valid for the title. The foregoing, first among the Italians, Botta Dritta fourth overall but second in the standings valid for the title. The Americans of Furio and the Brazilians on Bruschetta continue their face to face and finished, respectively first and second. Outstanding at the third round Mike Ingham on 11 Hour Racing, who finished third.

The crews in the field represent 9 countries: Italy, Germany, Hungary, Sweden, Monaco, Greece, Great Britain, USA and Brazil. In addition to the Europeans, are racing in the waters off the Gulf of Arzachena also some teams that participate in the competition off the charts, but always with great enthusiasm at the famous race course of the North East Sardinia. Among these, the reigning world champion Mauricio Santa Cruz of the J24 class on his Bruschetta.

Racing continues tomorrow, June 2 starting at 12 and Sunday 10 to 3 with an early departure. The hours remain unchanged in case of adverse weather conditions.
