SECOND DAY OF ITALIAN CHAMPIONSHIP J24 OPEN
Sunday, 27 May 2012 20:47

“La Superba” is the first after five regattas (provisional at 17.45)

On the second day of the Italian Open Championship being held in Cannigione, the fleet of 41 J24 has carried out three tests that led at the top overall boat of the Marina Militare Italiana, La Superba, national title holder. The starting signal was given by the Race Committee, chaired by George Battinelli, at 12.00 as scheduled. At 17.30 the first boats were already moored in the port of Cannigione.

The first race was the slowest of the day. With only 5 knots of northeasterly wind, the monotypes took over thirty minutes to get to the first windward mark. The air has started to blow on the downwind leg at around 13. Claudio Buiatti board of ITA 479 J di Quadri won the first, thus recovering the unsatisfactory results of yesterday.Followed in second place Swidish of Us 5488 11th Hour Racing with Mike Ingham at the helm and the third with the Greek Dimitrios Evnika Altsiadis as skipper. Very good test for the crews of the club organizer. ITA 405 Vigne Surrau with Aurelio Bini at the helm wins the third place in the fourth round, while ITA 318 Nord Est Costruzioni, carrying the Chairman of the Organizing Committee Tonino Chessa and Chairman of the Club Nautico Arzachena Pietrino Demuro, came in at sixth place.

The second and third regattas were conducted with a more constant wind, the same direction, but with an intensity of 7-8 knots. The fleet, in both cases, were clearly divided between those who had chosen the right side and left side of the field. The two compact groups on arrival at the mark gave the show and caused several tense moments, as well as to the many enthusiastic spectators who followed the race from the beaches of Arzachena. The last race was the most beautiful of all, as many commented on arrival in port, especially in the heads-up among the top four contestants, winners of selecting the right side of the field. On these prevailed ITA 460 Botta Dritta, one of the best Sardinian crews headed by the President of Italian J24 Class Mariolino Di Fraia. With the first place of today Di Fraia rais is position from the 24th position (yesterday) to the 19th of todays. After five tests the final standings saw the National Champion 2011 Ignazio Bonanno, Marina Militare Italiana, in first place with La Superba.

There are 24 Italian boats in the race for the title of Italian Champion of J24. With their boats on the start line 10 German, 1 British, 1 Brazilian, 1 American, 1 Swedish, 1 Greek, 1 Hungarian and 1 from the Principality of Monaco.
